PYTS requires the following prerequisites be completed PRIOR to application for consideration to the CYT and CE programs.
1. Applicants must hold a degree from an accredited University in a health care field (associate degree is a required minimum; however bachelor's degrees and higher are preferred). In order to matriculate, PYTS requires that all students have completed a University program in a medical science or allied health field of some type. Completion and board certification in their medical field assures that students have adequate comprehension of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics/kinesiology, developmental psychology, and some degree of training in statistics/research, the basic science of nutrition, physics, and higher level psychology courses.
2. The degree must be in a health care field such as medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, nursing, athletic training, other rehabilitative field, or assistant of a field of medicine or rehabilitation. PYTS Yoga Therapist Certification tract requires rigorous pre-requisites, only accepting students with a Health Care Professional Licenses. These licenses could include Physical Therapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), Registered Nurses (RN), Massage Therapists, Medical Doctors or related fields (MD, DO, OD, etc.), Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC), or Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Assistants (PTA/COTA), for example..
3. The degree coursework must include at least 1 or more semesters of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and patient care such as evidence based care or patient intervention and management. It is strongly recommended but not required that students have at least 1 semester of statistics or course in medical research, and biomechanics or kinesiology.
4. Applicants must have at least 1 year of personal yoga practice.
5. Applicants are strongly encouraged, but not required, to hold an RYT 200 or 500 before beginning the program, or at least have some degree of experience in direct patient care where design and implementation of exercise or wellness programs takes place. PYTS currently does not require students to have completed a yoga teacher training program prior to entry into our yoga therapist certification program; however, the majority of our students have already completed a yoga teacher training program prior to entry. Students who have extensive training in yoga teaching and yoga therapy prior to enrolling glean the most from and are the best prepared for matriculation into the CYT program.
*Note that health care professionals can take any CYT courses as CE without having to complete the certification.
Enrollment Prerequisites for Yoga Therapy Continuing Education Tract (non-certification)
